SSS Kills 18 Detained Boko Haram Insurgents In Escape Drama

By Saharareporters
Operatives of Nigeria’s secret police, the State Security Service (SSS), today killed 18 detainees being held at the facility of the Department of State Security as some of the detainees reportedly overpowered their guards, shot several operatives and broke down heavy doors at the detention facility to stage a daring escape.

An SSS source told SaharaReporters that the militants succeeded in freeing several inmates and almost taking over the complex before reinforcement came from the Nigerian military. He said the detainees had held the detention facility under a siege for several hours, with security agents negotiating with them to end the tense stand-off. He added that the operatives, aided by soldiers, went on the offensive after the detainees who had obtained weapons had run out of ammunition. He said most of the dead detainees were shot dead as they fled the complex. According to the source, four fleeing suspects were shot dead at a park near the facility.

The source said he could not state if any suspects succeeded in escaping. He would also not comment on the number of casualties on the side of the security operatives.
After the shooting, SSS spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, issued a statement that downplayed the attack, saying it was an attempted jailbreak by detained terrorists.

The statement issued read: “At 0715 hours, the Service suspect handler went to the detention facility within the Headquarters to feed the suspects.
“One of the suspects attempted to disarm him by hitting him at the back of his head with his handcuff.
“[The suspect’s] attempt to escape drew the attention of other guards at the facility who fired some shots to warn and deter others.

Drug Baron, Buruji Kashamu To Spend N1bn On Fayos || He Is Our Mobilizer, Says PDP

Buruji Kashamu
Indicted drug baron, Buruji Kashamu, is planning to spend N1 billion to ensure the return as governor of indicted former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose.
Kashamu is the man against whom former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, warned President Goodluck Jonathan in his famous letter in December 2013, calling him “a certified unashamed criminal.”

Obasanjo wrote: “Putting a certified unashamed criminal wanted abroad to face justice and who has greatly contributed to corruption within the judiciary on a high profile of politics as you and your aides have done with the man you enthrone as PDP Zonal leader in the South-West is the height of disservice to this country politically and height of insult to the people of South-West in general and members of PDP in that zone in particular.”

Last Friday, Buruji was present when Fayose went to the National Headquarters of the People's Democratic Party in Abuja to collect his certificate for winning the party's governorship primaries.

Women hired for the occasion were brought in three buses bought by Kashamu for the campaign and they arrived to sing the praises of the drug baron.
Kashamu was said to have provided the funds with which Fayose bribed the leadership of the party at the state and national levels in order to emerge as the winner.
It was the same Kashamu who also priced the logistics that dislodged a majority of the 13 aspirants from gaining access to the venue of the primaries.

As a form of loyalty, Fayose paid tribute to Kashamu and assured him that he would remain loyal to him if he wins the election.

Politics Biz: President Goodluck Jonathan Says Failure To Investigate Petroleum Minister Does Not Amount To Condoning Corruption

Doyin Okupe
Reported By Saharareporters, New York
The refusal of the Federal Government to probe Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke does not indicate that President Goodluck Jonathan will cover up any case of embezzlement or mismanagement of public funds exposed in his administration, the Presidency has said.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe gave the assurance on Sunday while reacting to media interpretations of his statement on the ongoing Federal House of Representatives probe of allegations of wasteful spending of public funds against the petroleum minister.
Punch Newspaper had quoted Okupe as saying that the Federal Government cannot set up a probe panel just on things that have not been substantiated as such.
“The information I have is that the House of Representatives is looking into the matter and they want to invite the honorable minister”, Okupe, according to Punch, said. “Definitely, the right thing is to wait for the outcome of such an interaction before anybody can decide to do anything”.

But the presidential spokesman hit back at the newspaper on Sunday, saying his words had been deliberately used against him.
“We wish to reiterate emphatically that President Goodluck Jonathan has never and will never condone any act of corruption no matter from which quarters such may come from”, he said.

Pastor Sam Adeyemi Says It Is Okay For a Lady To Propose to a Man

What do you make of this,Do you agree with him??
Leadership speaker and Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, while preaching on “Preparation for the wedding”, on Sunday March 16th, shared his opinion about women proposing to the man and also gave insight on how they can go about it. Below is what he said
“Some people may ask, Pastor is it okay for it to be the lady that will tell the guy about marriage? Well, is there anywhere in the bible that says a lady can’t tell a man? The thing though is, a lot of time, it’s better for the guy to pop the question because men become suspicious a lot of time when they are being chased. They like to eat meat that they chased in the bush. They don’t like the one that falls on their lap dead. However., sometimes, all the signs are there that she is the one but he is not just speaking. Its also not healthy for the lady emotionally for the man to be so close to her and yet not say anything. So in such a case, a lady needs to prod him.
So how can a lady go about it? Ask him where are we going? I sense this is where the relationship is going, what do you think? Its either a yes or a no, but with that, you know where you are going instead of being on an emotional roller coaster and your heart is smashed into pieces at the end of the day”.
Pastor Sam supported his position with the story of Ruth in the Bible who was taught to propose to Boaz whom she eventually married according to Ruth Chapter 3 in the Bible. He however emphasized the need for women to apply uttermost wisdom when proposing to a man.

Trick on How to lose weight in 7 days

More than one-third of adults in the United States are obese. In fact, the furor over obesity, which some have termed an “epidemic,” has reached such proportions that one big-city mayor has gone about banning large-sized, sugary soft drinks and the First Lady has been on a crusade to control the dietary offerings in public schools.
Even many adults who do not fit the clinic definition of obese are still overweight, and a large percentage are looking for the best ways to lose weight.

Shedding pounds largely comes down to the two-pronged factors of diet and exercise. Not modifying the first one enough, and not getting enough of the second one, ends up giving the individual a recipe for being overweight.
Conditions related to obesity include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Counseling someone to eat less and exercise more might be the simplest advice possible, but it’s also, partially, an oversimplification. When it comes to diet, no one needs to starve themselves in order to lose weight. It has more to do with the types of food you eat than how much you eat.
Reduce the amount of red meat in your diet. If you don’t want to eliminate red meat altogether, choose cuts of meat with less fat content. Limit your intake of salt and starches. If you’ve got to have potato chips alongside your sandwich at lunch, opt for the baked potato chips that are less greasy and contain less fat than the deep-fried chips. You might find you’re really not sacrificing that much in terms of taste.

D.C. National Guard Graduates Its First African-American Female Pilot

: (photo Courtesy of the U.S. Army)
First Lt. Dina Elosiebo has made women's history and Black history as the first African-American pilot for the D.C. National Guard in February. The Army made the announcement about its newest Army aviator on their website in March.

"When I think about the trailblazers who went before me and the adversity they continuously faced, be it gender, ethnicity, or simply doing what had not been done, it makes me realize I wouldn't have a story if it wasn't for them," Elosiebo said, according to the Army.

Elosiebo was given her "Army aviator wings" after she completed the Initial Entry Rotary Wing Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Regardless of race or gender, Elosiebo has accomplished something special that comes with rigorous training, according to Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz, the commanding general of the D.C. National Guard.

"The diversity of our armed forces is what makes us strong," Schwartz said, according to the Army.
The Tuskegee Airmen, African-American pilots who fought in World War II, had a great hand in helping Elosiebo rise through the ranks to her current position. She has received support through scholarships from their association and was also mentored by some of the original pilots.

Two unreleased Nokia phones revealed ahead of expected April 2nd debut

When Microsoft finally takes over Nokia’s ailing phone business in the coming weeks, it’s going to have a slew of new smartphones to account for. Beyond the many recent announcements out of Nokia — including a handful of Android phones that launched recently — it looks like at least two more Nokia smartphones will debut in less than two weeks.
My Nokia Blog on Thursday reported that two brand new Nokia phones will debut on April 2nd, the first day of Microsoft’s annual Build developers conference. According to the report, one will be the Lumia 930 and the second will be the much-rumored Lumia 630.

Insecurity across Nigeria caused by Jonathan’s incompetence, corruption, others, APC tells PDP

The APC said Mr. Jonathan is not the first minority to rule Nigeria, but most incompetent

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has said that President Goodluck Jonathan is not the first minority to rule Nigeria and will not be the last. The opposition party said the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s frequent references to Mr. Jonathan’s ethnicity is n a poorly-veiled attempt to cover up the president’s “incompetence, cluelessness and inferiority complex.”

The PDP had on Tuesday stated in a statement by its spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, that Mr. Jonathan was being persecuted by the opposition for no other reason than being a Nigerian from the minority. The PDP claimed that no leader in the history of Nigeria had faced the height of persecution that the President has been subjected to since he assumed office.

The APC, in a statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, said the PDP’s claim that the Boko Haram insurgency and other internecine crises in the country were being sponsored by the opposition because the President hails from a minority group was totally irresponsible and absolutely not grounded in fact.

Tech Solutions: Microsoft To African Businesses: Upgrade to Windows 8

Microsoft wants small-business owners in Africa to upgrade their operating systems to Windows 8 because computers running on Windows XP will stop receiving service on April 9, making them vulnerable to cyber attacks, HumanIPO reports.
The service that will end April 9 includes users receiving critical security patches and updates.
Microsoft said failure by these businesses to upgrade will make them increasingly vulnerable to harmful viruses, spyware and cyber attacks that steal or damage personal information and business data, according to HumanIPO.

“With small businesses contributing up to 50 percent of gross domestic product and up to 90 percent of employment in many sub-Saharan African economies, it is vital that they embrace newer technologies to remain competitive and thrive in the modern era,” said Rotimi Olumide, Windows group leader for West, East, Central Africa and Indian Ocean Islands.

Microsoft claims that Windows 8 — equipped with suites like Office 365 — offers complete protection against modern threats and has more value than personal computers running on XP, according to an AllAfrica report.
Benefits of Windows 8 and Window 8.1 include increased speed, reliability, security and a range of productivity-boosting apps, Microsoft claims. They also costs less to own, with new hardware experiences including tools that allow the workforce to stay productive and connected virtually anytime, anywhere, according to AllAfrica.
Chege Thumbi is director of technology and operations at NIC Bank, a commercial bank in Kenya. The bank moved from Windows XP to Windows 8 — a critical and necessary decision, Thumbi told AllAfrica.

Trusting Nigeria’s Guaranty Trust Bank_By Ryan Hoover

Nigeria’s biggest bank.
Those three words may well be a convincing-enough investment thesis for many stock speculators.
With its enormous and young population, wealth of oil and gas reserves, and improving infrastructure, Nigeria epitomizes Africa’s potential. And few companies stand to benefit more as the country fulfills that potential than its banks.
Exposed as they are to a broad swath of the nation’s economic activity, from infrastructure to agriculture, small-and-medium-sized enterprises to corporates, and individuals to conglomerates, banks are a fantastic way to participate in a country’s macroeconomic growth.
Nigeria’s largest bank in terms of market value, Guaranty Trust Bank is one that every Africa investor should take some time to get to know.

Homegrown Success Story

Guaranty Trust (commonly known as GTBank) has grown since its formation in 1990. Unlike many of Africa’s homegrown banks, its strategy focused on attracting corporate customers instead of retail clients. The approach meant it needed to grow its asset base quickly in order to compete with multinational banks for big lending deals.
Toward that end, it raised capital via an IPO on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1996, just five years after opening its first branch. A rights offering, a secondary listing on the London Stock Exchange (Nigeria’s first), and a Eurobond soon followed.
Now, with Nigeria’s central bank reducing the attractiveness of public sector deposits, GTBank’s management is turning its attention to the ordinary man and woman on the street. A larger base of retail customers would give the bank a nice pool of inexpensive money to lend.

Buy the Numbers

So far, so good, it would seem. The bank grew its deposits 23 percent in 2013. Perhaps more importantly, it put more of those deposits to productive use than it has in previous years. The loan-to-deposit ratio increased from 66.9 percent to 69.9 percent one year earlier.
Alas, record-high interest rates and regulatory changes obscured these encouraging balance-sheet trends. The compressed margin between the interest GTBank was able to charge its borrowers and the rate it was forced to pay its creditors meant that net interest income increased just 5 percent. And new limits on ATM and transaction fees muted growth in non-interest income.
These stiff 2013 headwinds meant that the bank’s earnings growth amounted to just 4% for the year – not exactly the sort of performance that’s going to provoke a stampede of investors to the stock. In fact, GTBank’s London share price has dropped 9 percent since the results were announced.
In my view, the drop gives long-term Africa investors a unique opportunity to pick up shares of the bank at a discounted price.
Here are three reasons why.

Pakistan rape victim dies after setting self ablaze in protest

MULTAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - The 17-year-old Pakistani victim of a gang rape died on Friday after setting herself on fire in protest against a police report that led to the release of a key suspect, a doctor and her brother said.
Rape and other forms of sexual assault and domestic violence are widespread in deeply conservative Pakistan, but such public acts of desperation by abused women are rare.
College student Amina Bibi doused herself with petrol and then set it alight on Thursday outside a police station near the city of Muzaffargarh, in Pakistan's eastern province of Punjab.
A video shot by a bystander shows a woman in a headscarf engulfed by flames, her face charred and distorted in agony.
"She was under our treatment but she succumbed to her wounds on Friday morning," Muhammad Usman, a local doctor, told Reuters.
The police decision to release the main suspect had been too much for Bibi to handle, her brother told Reuters.
"She was already depressed after going through the trauma, but after the release of the accused, she lost all hope of getting justice and set herself on fire," Ghulam Shabir said.
Bibi was raped by five men as she walked home from her college on January 5, he added.

I hate dubious, untrustworthy people,Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says_by Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji

Obasanjo says he is angered only by untrustworthy and dubious people.
A former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday said he dislikes dubious and untrustworthy people and never wants to work with them. Mr. Obasanjo described himself as one of the easiest persons to work with, contrary to some schools of thought that he is highly temperamental and unaccommodating.
Mr. Obasanjo stated this on Monday in Abeokuta, when two authors discussed the relationship between him and Ufot Ekaette. Mr. Ekaette was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation during the Obasanjo administration.
The discussants were Muyiwa Akintunde and Des Wilson, a professor at the University of Uyo, who are co-authoring a book on Mr. Ekaette.
The former president explained at his hilltop residence that the major traits he disliked in individuals were untrustworthiness and dubiousness.

Amazing 10 Foods to Eat Every Day for Perfect Skin

Foods to Eat Every Day for Perfect Skin
Are you tired of using different expensive and ineffective beauty products? It’s time to throw away all those ineffective products and start eating foods for perfect skin. I went from terrible acne five months ago to not having acne now. It was hard, but it was possible, and less expensive than turning to pricey products. While some foods can aggravate your skin, others can enhance it. Check out a list of 10 foods to eat every day for perfect skin.

1. Red bell peppers

Red bell peppers
Red bell peppers are a tasty vegetable that can be enjoyed either cooked or raw. One red bell pepper contains more than 100% of your daily vitamin C needs. It also contains significant amounts of dietary fiber and vitamin B6. Moreover, it is rich in carotenoids that can help prevent wrinkles and increase blood circulation to your skin, helping it look more youthful. Due to their carotenoids, red bell peppers are also great to fight acne.
A red bell pepper is a perfect, low calorie snack that contains about 30 calories and has a really satisfying crunchy bite. Keep slices of red bell peppers in the fridge, so you will always have something healthy and tasty to reach for when you are having a snack attack. The fiber that a bell pepper contains will help you to feel full longer with very little calories. Plus, you will have a flawless skin!

Woman with The Largest Hips in the World

By: Hydar Tomar

(Scroll down for video) A woman who owns the title to the world’s biggest hips, likes her assets.

Mikel Ruffinelli, 39, of California, is a married mother of 4, who lives an active lifestyle.

Ruffinelli was an athletic teenager, who had no problems with her weight. She first began to notice that her hips were growing at age 22, just after the birth of her first child.

Ruffinelli said that with every child, her hips grew wider until she was unable to fit through a regular door. Although her waist measures 40 inches, her hips are a staggering 100 inches. It is the biggest in the world.

“When I walk on the street, people pull out their cellphone and take pictures or videos of me,” Ruffinelli said.
Some people ask if they can take a picture with her, while others just take some from her backside when she passed them.

“Some people assume that I had surgery to improve the shape of my body, but it's all natural,” she insisted. Ruffinelli has no plans to lose weight, but she admitted that her size has occasionally caused problems.

When she goes on an airplane she must buy two seats so she can fit her body, and that gets pretty expensive. She also has to go through doors sideways, and she cannot close the door of her shower because her hips are in the way.

Ruffinelli lives in Los Angeles, with her husband Reggie Brooks, and their 4 children. “I love her shape, but it was her sweet personality that first attracted me,” her husband said.

When will Nigeria has stable electricity?>>Power outages disrupt Nigeria Governors’ Forum retreat

Friday’s retreat focuses on priority areas such as agriculture, corruption, education and security.
Frequent power outage at the venue of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, retreat, Friday, disrupted activities at the event as politicians and experts met to explore possibilities for moving the country forward.
The 3rd NGF Retreat ‘Towards a Sustainable Democracy’ held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
The first session, chaired by Bukola Saraki, former NGF Chairman, began with two topics – ‘Overview of the Current State of Agriculture in the States’ and ‘Nigeria Without Oil: Unlocking Agricultural Value Chain.
At the beginning of the session, there was a five minute power outage, forcing the announcer to scramble for an apology to the audience after electricity was restored. A few minutes later, there was another power cut which lasted three minutes.
The third power cut within the hour lasted almost 30 minutes, throwing the hall into darkness and forcing the governors to make a momentary exit; a 10-minute break was announced.
Some of the governors joked that the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party was responsible for the disruptions.

5 Natural Remedies for Yellow Nails

It happens to the best of us: After months of wearing polish, you may be a little grossed out to find that your nails are, well, looking a little grody. Yellowing nails is pretty common however, and typically not serious (though, if you’re unsure, go see a doctor). Also, it’s a fairly easy problem to combat.
But, rather than turn to chemical remedies to make your natural nails sparkle again, check out these totally harmless, natural cures first. They’ll have your nails looking normal again in no time.
Baking Soda>> Beauty expert Elizabeth Garcia of Elizabeth’s Secret Beauty Bar recommends mixing a little baking soda with a little water—making a paste-like substance—and soaking your fingernails in it for a couple minutes. Just like baking soda can bleach away spots in your sink, this natural remedy can de-yellow those digits.
Hydrogen Peroxide>> No baking soda handy? Try soaking your fingernails in hydrogen peroxide, Garcia says. But know that this remedy takes a bit longer: You’ll need to do it for five minutes several days in a row to see results.
Lemon Juice>> For a truly natural remedy, cut open a lemon and stick your fingernails in it, Garcia advises. The acid in the fruit can naturally whiten your nails.
Tea Tree Oil>> To keep nails looking healthy and clean in the long-term, use this natural antiseptic on your nails and nail beds, which can clear away yellowing (and even infection) after habitual use for two to three months. Applying this oil can even keep nails from yellowing in the first place.
Non-Toxic Basecoat>> Always remember to use a base coat before applying any nail polish, especially dark colors, Garcia says, so you can avoid nail discoloration. Try a chemical-free brand like Scotch Naturals, which makes all of its polishes—including top and base coat—without phthalates, parabens, solvents and acetone.

From Obama to Okonjo-Iweala

14 Mar 2014
DIALOGUE WITH NIGERIA By AKIN OSUNTOKUN
On account of my hypersensitivity to anything concerning President Barack Obama I was extremely anxious and alert to all the dynamics and trend of the November 2012 election cycle. I monitored the polls on hourly basis and my mood swings were directly proportional to the see saw of the polls on Obama’s electoral fortunes. One of the major highlights in the reportage of the election was the conduct of the over hyped corporate guru Jack Welch. He was a Republican Party die hard and an ardent supporter of his party’s presidential candidate, Mitt Romney.
After the inexplicable dismal outing Obama had at the first presidential debate, the Republicans were euphoric but their victory dance was cut short by an unexpected but significant endorsement of Obama’s effort at reviving the American economy. In October, a month before the presidential election, the unemployment rate had fallen from 8.1 per cent to 7.8 per cent according to the monthly report by the Labour department. Welch went ballistic and tweeted ‘Unbelievable jobs numbers…. these Chicago guys will do anything.., can’t debate so change the numbers’! It was a sad day for Welch. His peers and colleagues told him that he was flat out of his mind but it was typical and illustrative of the Republican Party’s desperation to black out any positive reflection of Obama’s stewardship.
As the persistent macabre and self-inflicted Republican Party engineered economic gridlock indicates, these guys were prepared to bankrupt the American economy if that was what it took to destroy Obama and regain political power. This self-destructive, it is either me or the highway ideology, is in full flight in contemporary Nigeria. The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been one of the unique discoveries of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and she was a revelation in whom we were all pleased. Not any longer, apparently.

I Was Horrified By Nigeria’s Anti-Gay Law, Says Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

By Saharareporters, New York
Nigeria’s award winning writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said yesterday that she was horrified by Nigeria’s anti-gay law signed by President Goodluck Jonathan early this year. She made the comment while answering listeners’ questions on WNYC Radio’s Brian Lehrer Show. She defended the article she wrote in which she called the law unconstitutional and unjust.

The piece, titled, “Why Can’t He Just Be Like Everyone Else?” received numerous responses from Nigerians, many of which were negative. Speaking to Brian Lehrer, Ms. Adichie said that she wrote the article to start a conversation with Nigerians of her generation. “I think part of it is religion,” she said. “Religion has so clouded the discourse on topics of this sort that very often it is no longer about humanity. It just becomes about the Bible said this is wrong, therefore we should stone them kind of thing.”

Adichie said that despite the negative reaction of some Nigerians to her piece she would write the same piece again if she had to.

The author of the bestselling novel, “Half of A Yellow Sun” also noted that the piece changed some minds. “For every 10 people that said you are possessed by the demons and that sort of things,” she said, “one person has said that I am rethinking this and I am starting to see that it makes no sense at all to criminalize people for being who they are.”

Adichie appeared on the popular New York City radio program few hours before she won the prestigious National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction for her latest novel, “Americanah”. In Americanah, she tells the story of an African immigrant in America as she deals with the issue of race and identity. The paperback version of the book has just been published.
